Call for Courageous Leadership during the Government Shutdown!

For the first time in 17 years our Congress has failed to pass a budget, resulting in a shutdown of the Federal government. It seems that many of our elected officials have lost sight of the promise to faithfully discharge the duties of office, which include passing a federal budget each year that meets the needs and reflects the values of our nation.

Government ShutdownAct to protect the common good. Join us in calling for courageous leadership in this time of government dysfunction!

Rather than serving the needs of our communities, our legislators engaged in hyper-partisan debates and failed to approve a budget for the 2014 fiscal year which began on October 1. The resulting federal government shutdown threatens the wellbeing of our people and the weak economy. Its wide-ranging impacts are already, or soon will be, resulting in:

  • Delays or cuts in unemployment and veterans’ benefits;
  • A halt in public health efforts to combat the upcoming flu season;
  • Suspended cleanup at toxic waste sites;
  • The loss of supplemental nutrition provided for 9 million babies, infants, and mothers; and more.

Budget agreement was blocked by members of the House of Representatives who refused their support unless the agreement also defunded or delayed the Affordable Care Act (ACA), also known as Obamacare. These are failed tactics, designed to score partisan points.

Though Congress must pass the federal budget, it belongs to every American. This common fund formed of our combined tax revenues is designed to support the shared infrastructure, well-being, and long-term ethical values of our society. As people of faith we find it morally irresponsible for a small group of policy makers to block the process by which we provide for our nation's shared needs in a bid to force their legislative priorities on Congress and the country.

We need bold leadership and effective governance—NOW. Tell Congress to pass a short-term budget agreement to restore a functioning  government!
