Defend a Free and Open Internet For All - Support Net Neutrality
In May, the Federal Communications Commission put forward a
plan to consider paid priority “fast lanes” on the Internet. If approved, the
plan would allow Internet service providers to create a divided Internet: one part
serving companies and individuals who can pay for premium service, and the
other part (dis)serving those who can’t.
This week is an
important deadline for submitting public comments to the FCC. Submit your comment to make sure the
collective voice of the United Church of Christ is represented in this
important decision about the future of the Internet.
The Internet is an essential communications medium that
enables the work of groups who fight for justice and equality. Equal access to
the Internet helps educate and support poor and underserved individuals around
The unique and often marginalized messages of these minority
groups are magnified through e-advocacy tools, social media, blogs, podcasts
and videos that, up to now, have existed on a level playing field with all
other content. The Internet has allowed people to communicate freely when the
gatekeepers of traditional media have otherwise denied them.
If opponents of net neutrality succeed, advocates for equity
and civil rights could have to pay up or be forced to the back of the Internet
bus. We will be left with no protection if an Internet company decides to favor
its own content, charge extra fees for noncommercial video, or just plain
censor unpopular views.

We need you to act
NOW to tell the FCC that you support a free and open Internet on behalf of all
people who need unfettered access to communication networks. Tell them that you
oppose the repeal of rules that protect an open Internet.
