JPANet: Take Action to Prevent Sexual & Domestic Violence
2011 ended before
Congress reauthorized the Violence Against
Women Act (VAWA) of 2011. Now is the
time to ask your Senators and Representatives to co-sponsor, support and fully
the work of law enforcement officers, prosecutors, courts, shelters and other
programs to stem domestic and dating violence, sexual assault and stalking.
Since it was first passed by Congress in 1994, VAWA has been successful in
developing effective prevention strategies and support to victims of sexual and
domestic violence. However, it could be
more successful if it was fully funded.
2011 version of VAWA includes increased funding for rural areas and programs
for Native American women, more attention to the needs of women with
disabilities, increased support for linguistic services, and programs that
focus on the effect of domestic violence on children who witness it. It also recognizes cyberstalking as a form of
VAWA saves lives. Since it was first passed in 1994, there has been as much as a 51 percent increase in reporting by women and a 37 percent increase in reporting by men. The number of women and men killed by an intimate partner has decreased 34 percent for women and 57 percent for men. VAWA is effective and cost-efficient. In its first six years, VAWA saved taxpayers at least $14.8 billion in net averted social costs.
people of faith and members of the United Church of Christ which has actively
advocated for awareness and advocacy to end violence against women and within
families, we must add our support to programs to prevent and address
violence. The reauthorization of the
Violence Against Women Act is one way to move toward a society where women and
men are fully respected and protected from violence, especially violence that
occurs because of one’s gender.
Ask your members
of Congress to co-sponsor, support and fully fund the reauthorization of VAWA
2011. This should have been done in 2011
so now is the time to act.
