JPANet: Food for the World

World HungerAt General Synod in June, the delegates voted overwhelmingly to pass a resolution addressing the global food crisis. Fully one-sixth of the world suffers from hunger, over one billion people. In the past eighteen months, that number reached catastrophic proportions. The causes of this crisis are outlined in the resolution’s background.

This week (October 12-13, 2009), a group of high level experts met in Rome to discuss how to feed the world to 2050. This was a critical opportunity to address this issue and was tied to three other opportunities to address this moral travesty:

These critical meetings will set the stage for how the international community will address this issue. President Obama will play an important role in leading this challenge and making a case for how food, trade, and climate change are critically interrelated. It is important for us to let him know we expect him to provide the strong leadership we know he is capable of.

Urge President Obama to call for the promotion of just and sustainable food production through practices that are participatory, environmentally friendly, socially sustainable and support the right of all people to adequate, healthy and culturally appropriate food.
