JPANet: Tell Congress to Protect Hungry Families!

Child HungerCongress is working now on the Farm Bill, a piece of legislation that sets the framework for what we eat, whether our food is nourishing and affordable, what crops farmers grow under what conditions, global grain and fiber markets, and how rural land is used. The Farm Bill also establishes what assistance our society provides to feed hungry people.

Major cuts are being proposed to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP, formally known as food stamps) that will have a devastating impact on families in our communities. If our Representative is a member of the House Agriculture Committee, they have an opportunity to protect this vital program.

Some Members of Congress have suggested that churches should be primarily responsible for feeding hungry people and will make up the gap if the government cuts SNAP. The extreme cuts being offered by the House Budget and Agriculture Committees would mean that to keep people from going hungry, on average every church in the country would have to come up with approximately $50,000 dedicated to feeding people — every year for the next 10 years.

God calls us to stand up against injustice. Budget choices that cause food lines to grow longer during a time of great need are unjust. Congress needs to take responsibility and continue helping hungry people in our nation.
