NEW ECCLESIOLOGY AND POLITY

$14.00

In the New Ecclesiology and Polity, Steckel argues that the United Church of Christ ecclesiology and its polity have an urgent need to be re-examined and re-shaped if the church is to be a faithful and strong ministry in the post-modern world.  He describes the transition from modernity to post-modernity focusing on ways the United Church of Christ, is aware of these transitions in the life of church, but no awareness of how the denominational governing structures undermine faithful mission in a post-modern world.

Clyde J. Steckel is an ordained minister in the United Church of Christ and is Emeritus Professor of Theology at United Theological Seminary of the Twin Cities.  He received an M.A. and Ph.D. from the University of Chicago.

HIDDEN HISTORIES IN THE UNITED CHURCH OF CHRIST, VOLUME 1
Barbara Brown Zikmund

ISBN/Prod. Code: 0-8298-0704-7
USA
$18.00  Your uploaded image.

The United Church of Christ is a denomination which reflects the pluralistic story of American Protestantism. Created in 1957, the UCC has brought together ecclesiastical bodies rooted in English Puritanism, American frontier revivalism, and German religious history. In this book, the contributors attempt to move beyond the four main streams of the UCC - the UCC "historical orthodoxy."

This collection of essays expands knowledge about the diversity of the UCC, and connects the UCC with many significant developments in American religious and ethnic history. It explores such areas as Native American Protestantism, black Christian churches, a schism in the German Reformed Church, Armenian congregationalism's missionary beginnings, German congregationalism, blacks and the American Missionary Association, Deaconess ministries, the Schwenkfelders, the Calvin Synod (Hungarian), women's work and women's boards, and Japanese-American congregationalists.

Contributors include: Clifford Alika, Percel O. Alston, John Butosi, William G. Chrystal, Clara Merritt DeBoer, Sally A. Dries, Serge F. Hummon, Martha B. Kriebel, Miya Okawara, Ruth W. Rasche, John C. Shetler, Vahan H. Tootikian, and Barbara Brown Zikmund.

BARBARA BROWN ZIKMUND is Dean and Associate Professor of Church History at the Pacific School of Religion in Berkeley, CA, and a member of the UCC Historical Council.

In this volume, Dr. Zikmund continues the untold stories in the formation of the United Church of Christ. Volume 1 focused on those ethnic groups or ecclesiastical movements often overlooked by UCC historical orthodoxy. This second book of essays does two things: it provides additional information about groups not covered in the original collection, and it explores the sources of some principles and practices important to United Church of Christ identity.

This book invites readers to enhance their knowledge of history as an important source of spiritual strength for these times. It also examines more deeply what it means for the United Church of Christ to celebrate its "unity in diversity." It explores such areas as Lutheran and Reformed Cooperation; German Evangelical Protestants; Origins of the Christian Denomination in New England; Evangelical Pietism and Biblical Criticism; Women's Mission Structures and the American Board; Religious Journalism; Philip William Otterbein and the United Brethren; From German Reformed Roots to the Churches of God; The Congregational Training School for Women; and Chinese Congregationalism.

Contributors include: J. Martin Bailey, Dorothy C. Bass, Curtis Beach, Thomas E. Dipko, Matthew Fong, J. Harvey Gossard, Rose Lee, Elizabeth C. Nordbeck, Horace S. Sills, Priscilla Stuckey-Kauffman, Dorothy Wong, Barbara Brown Zikmund, and Lowell H. Zuck.

SHAPING OF THE UNITED CHURCH OF CHRIST, THE
An Essay in the History of American Christianity
LOUIS H. GUNNEMANN
Expanded by CHARLES SHELBY ROOKS

ISBN/Prod. Code: 0-8298-1345-4
USA
$22.00  Your uploaded image.

The author wrote a compelling story of how the United Church of Christ took shape in the mid-twentieth century. During this time, church unions were a prominent feature of the movement toward Christian unity and secular models of organization dominated denominational development. Charles Shelby Rooks has expanded this classic text by bringing the United Church of Christ story to the forty-year mark.

Today the United Church of Christ has grown into a denomination that strives to become a multicultural and multiracial church. Rooks's additional chapter provides reflections on five themes woven throughout the church between 1977 and 1998. The documentation cited will provide helpful guidance to anyone seeking to pursue additional study of the United Church of Christ.

An interpretive essay in the the history of American Christianity, this book is also a narrative account of the church union process itself. In that respect it is of significance for Protestant Christianity in general.

LOUIS H. GUNNEMANN, now deceased, was professor emeritus of ministry studies and former dean of United Theological Seminary of the Twin Cities.

CHARLES SHELBY ROOKS is executive vice president emeritus of the United Church Board for Homeland Ministries, United Church of Christ.

Yet we remain what we have always been at our best, a people bearing witness to a grand moral vision rooted in the Bible and the person of the crucified and risen Christ, and a people of spiritual audacity, prepared to risk old assumptions for the sake of new possibilities."
    - John H. Thomas, General Minister and President, United Church of Christ

UNITED AND UNITING Your uploaded image.
The Meaning of an Ecclesial Journey
LOUIS H. GUNNEMANN

ISBN/Prod. Code: 0-8298-0757-8
USA
$18.00

United and Uniting continues the ongoing story of the United Church of Christ that Dr. Gunnemann began in his The Shaping of the United Church of Christ (United Church Press).  From its beginning, the United Church of Christ has exhibited some singularly formative ecclesial ideas, expressed in the intention to be a united and uniting church.  The author believes that from time to time these ideas need to be illustrated in the context of their ongoing expression and development.

This book provides an invitation to readers to join in a recovery of the original vision and, at the same time, to allow it to correct, through historical perspective, their own understanding of the United Church of Christ.  Dr. Gunnemann suggests that the needed perspectives for a fresh and renewed understanding of the vision that created the United Church of Christ are framed by the history of the modern ecumenical movement.

Louis H. Gunnemann, now deceased, was an ordained minister of the United Church of Christ and professor emeritus of ministry studies and former dean of United Theological Seminary of the Twin Cities.  He co-edited Prism, a theological journal sponsored by the seven closely related seminaries of the United Church of Christ.

BALAAM'S UNOFFICIAL HANDBOOK OF THE UNITED CHURCH OF CHRIST
BALAAM'S COURIER STAFF

ISBN/Prod. Code: 978-0-8298-1797-3
USA
$16.00

“For over 15 years I have been a supporter of Balaam’s Courier, the ‘underground newspaper’ distributed at each General Synod. I have been grateful for its serious humor and sometimes whimsical efforts to keep UCC leaders and delegates accountable to God. This handbook explores UCC views of Jesus, the Bible, worship, church structures, and social witness, and enriches understandings of the UCC logo. It serves as a good introduction for people who know nothing about the UCC, and a healthy reminder for people who might forget they don’t know everything about the UCC.”
             - Barbara Brown Zikmund, series editor, The Living Theological Heritage of the United Church of Christ, and retired seminary educator

"It’s all here--history, theology, Bible, worship, polity, and mission--narrated with the humor and light touch we’ve eagerly awaited at General Synods when Balaam’s Courier is handed out. But do not be fooled by the humor. The prophet’s call for liberating justice is the heart of this narrative. Is that the core UCC narrative? Officially yes; actually probably not; but it should be!”
            - Clyde J. Steckel, emeritus professor of theology, United Theological Seminary of the Twin Cities

“Filled with pithy insights and historical information, you’ll find a well-organized and compelling resource for all who ‘simply wonder and don’t know’ about the UCC!”
            - Dale A. Hempen, associate conference minister, Massachusetts Conference, and co-coordinator of UCC Polity Teachers’ Network

The staff of Balaam’s Courier, the unofficial General Synod daily publication since 1975, provides a handbook of the basics of the UCC for new member and confirmation classes and anyone who has ever struggled to explain the UCC to others. Written with a light touch, but a passion for the life and work of the UCC--and sprinkled with black-and-white cartoon illustrations--it gives historical, biblical, and theological insights into issues that have challenged the church throughout the ages.

Contributors include members of the Balaam’s Courier staff: Ted Braun, Tom Warren, Jan Bodin, and Mark Lents. Braun, a retired United Church of Christ pastor from Pleasant Hill, Tennessee, is the longtime editor.

CONFESSING OUR FAITH
An Interpretation of the Statement of Faith of the United Church of Christ
ROGER L. SHINN

ISBN/Prod. Code: 0-8298-0866-3
USA
$13.00  Your uploaded image.

This interpretation of Christian faith - organized in terms of "the Great Story" of scripture, not topically like the classical creeds - is an example of the "narrative theology" of our times. It is an interpretation, in some ways a reinterpretation, of the Statement of Faith of the United Church of Christ which was adopted in 1959. Since that time a variety of theological movements has stirred the churches and two revisions of the original Statement of Faith were drafted to respond to those movements.

This book describes the process which involved local churches and international discussions and which led to the original Statement of Faith. It also reports the history of the revisions and the reasons for them. It then presents a sentence by sentence commenatry on the text of the latest revision. It indicates where the statement expresses firm convictions and where it encourages continued discussion among people of differing beliefs within the church. It points out issues that will require further consideration as the United Church of Christ continues to work toward its declared aim of collaborating with other churches in the development of a new statement of faith.

ROGER L. SHINN is the Reinhold Niebuhr Professor Emeritus of Social Ethics at Union Theological Seminary in New York. Since his retirement from Union, he has taught at the Pacific School of Religion, Drew University, and Princeton Theological Seminary.  He has authored and edited numerous books.
