Tell Congress: Ensure Safety Rules Actually Protect People
In order to effectively protect you and your family from possible hazards—from lead in children's lunchboxes to the nuclear waste stored at a nearby nuclear power plant—commissioners of independent federal agencies such as the Consumer Product Safety Commission and Nuclear Regulatory Commission have been able to promptly employ safety rules without additional review.
But now there is a push in Congress under the Independent Agency Regulatory Analysis Act to add a superfluous layer of oversight that could render these agencies toothless during times when we most need swift action. Under this bill, agencies' rules would undergo a redundant cost-benefit review by the Office of Management and Budget. This extra layer will also give business interests more opportunities to attempt to weaken or delay the rules.
Urge your members of Congress to oppose legislation that would make it harder for federal agencies to protect you and your family.
