A Real Superhero for Agriculture's Challenges
For centuries, farmers were often limited to labor-intensive ways to fight weeds. So when Monsanto introduced crops genetically engineered (GE) to be immune to the company's patented herbicide, Roundup, it was hailed as a breakthrough. But the weeds evolved to withstand the herbicide and today these "superweeds" infest millions of U.S. farm acres. In response, agribusiness companies have doubled down, proposing new GE crops with new, more toxic herbicides.
There's a better way. Farmers can control weeds using practices grounded in the science of agroecology, which not only help control weeds, but have other benefits including increased soil fertility and reduced water pollution. More research is needed to help farmers, yet critical federal research programs are underfunded.
Write to your members of Congress today and ask them to fund sustainable agriculture research to find lasting solutions to farming challenges.
