Our team "Mighty Brave for Selective Mutism" is running to honor our brave friends with SM as well
as to bring attention to the term Selective Mutism (SM). SM, in short, is a neurobiological anxiety
disorder that impacts the ability of a typically verbal individual to speak in social settings
(i.e., it impacts a child's ability to talk in school, to talk to others outside of immediate family,
to talk to peers, to talk outside the home). It is more than shyness. Early idenification and
treatment is beneficial. Our team hopes public (i.e., teachers, families) and professional
(i.e., therapists, pediatricians) awareness, knowledge, and support continue to increase.
Kennedy Krieger has been an amazing resource for our family. It holds a dear place in my
heart for which I am forever grateful! Many (many) years ago, while working at KKI, I was
encouraged to pursue a degree in speech-language pathology. Then while studying for
my masters, I was blessed to receive a portion of my extermship training there. I am
aware of the many specialities and the talents of its staff. I hope that the institution,
its many departments, and its extraordinary staff will forever be able to offer assistance
to the many families needing their expertise and guidance.
