ROAR with Tay
I need your support
This spring, I will be taking part in Kennedy Krieger Institute's annual ROAR for Kids.
You can make your voice heard as we come together to ROAR for Kids at Kennedy Krieger.
I appreciate your support as I participate in this wonderful event.
Hey All! As some of you may know my birthday is in 3 weeks. This year I am asking instead of gifts, please donate to the Kennedy Krieger Institute as I am apart of the adult sled hockey team at the Bennett Institute Booster Club and donations will go towards them!! I have been playing sled hockey since October and cannot express how many friendships and doors have been open through the sport!! I can honestly say that hockey is a close second to swimming on my all time favorite sports to play :) There is something truly special that pertains to working out and loving life with other adaptive athletes who understand the freedom of being out on the ice and the unique experiences on land. I love learning all the skills alongside the junior team. I am also so thankful for coaches Gwena Herman and Gerry Herman for teaching me the ropes of hockey and giving me the opportunity to volunteer swim coach with the Blazers! It's crazy to say but winter cannot come fast enough for hockey season to start up again @coachbill! Until then I plan on weekly practices with the USA Warriors Ice Hockey up in Rockville when I have the time.
I am also grateful for the Kennedy Krieger Institute as they are overseeing all of my medical care now. This morning I had an appointment with a group of specialists at the Pediatric Pain Rehabilitation Clinic and they were able to help support me and strategize a plan for my conditions involving my lumbar spine, gait mobility, Ehlers Danlos Syndrome, and POTS. They are currently recommending a 2-4 week intensive inpatient rehabilitation program at the hospital focusing on my leg weakness and gait. The earliest I can is not until August, so the plan is to begin weekly physical and occupational therapy with a reassessment in 3 months for further treatment plans. They were also able to provide insight on removing and beginning medications to ensure my health prevails in the long term. Please keep me and my doctors in your prayers that we can find something affordable and successful!
I am also excited to share that I have found three marathons I will be completing in the fall as a push rim competitor: Marine Corp, VCU Richmond, and Wine Glass! As of now, I have been training with handbikes at the gym to increase my endurance with swimming, light lifting, and boxing as cross training and am currently applying for grants to get my own racing chair. Hopefully now with my EDS diagnosis, we can avoid frequent future injuries like I fell into in the past. Thank you all so much!
