Holloman Air Force Base near Alamogordo, New Mexico is proposing to expand its Special Use Airspace to encompass airspace over the Gila and Aldo Leopold Wilderness Areas and other portions of the Gila National Forest.
Help us protect the Gila Wilderness by telling Holloman Air Force Base to leave our skies alone.
Everyone, from humans to wolves, needs quiet spaces under quiet skies.
Public comments on the Holloman Air Force Base Special Use Airspace Optimization Environmental Impact Statement
Dear [Decision Maker],
Please consider the below public comments in preparing your DEIS.
I oppose the proposed alternative #2, expansion of military overflights in airspace over the Gila National Forest and the Gila and Aldo Leopold Wilderness Areas. These are conservation areas of national and international significance. Holloman's proposed action will have severe and irreparable impacts on the wilderness characteristic of solitude and the requirement of the Wilderness Act for wilderness areas to be managed in such a way "that will leave them unimpaired for future generations."The Draft Environmental Impact Statement (DEIS) should fully analyze the impacts of military aircraft, such as audible and sonic noise, flares, air quality impacts, debris, and emergency procedures, such as ditching fuel tanks, on public health, wildlife, outdoor recreation, tourism, and property values. The DEIS should fully analyze the impact of the proposed alternatives on the ability of other federal agencies to carry out their missions, including the ability of the Forest Service to manage for wilderness qualities on a landscape under a military airspace. The DEIS should fully analyze whether existing scheduled airspace over the 3.6 million acres owned by the Department of Defense in the State of New Mexico could fulfill the stated needs of the training program.
