Shepherd,
a 9-month-old pit bull-type puppy, was left for dead – abandoned in a ditch
where he laid helpless for another 8 to 10 hours unable to lift his head, let
alone walk.
When
Humane Law Enforcement Officers (HLE) with the Humane Rescue Alliance found
Shepherd, he was severely emaciated, hypothermic, and suffering from skin
infections. He had open pressure sores that developed from lying on his
protruding bones. Worst of all, he was unresponsive.
“Had we waited any longer, I don’t
think he would have made it,” said HRA Officer Thomas Ingle.
Over the
next 11 weeks, Shepherd made tremendous progress -- safely gaining weight and
regaining strength and mobility in his hind legs. Eventually he was healthy
enough to be adopted and found the perfect family.
Now named ‘Tig,’ he
spends his days going on walks, playing, and snuggling with his new canine
brother and sister.
When Shepherd was
initially presented to the hospital, he was fighting for his life and in grave
condition, and we were right there along with him helping him every step of the
way.
Shepherd is an
amazing example, but he is just one example of the countless lives we save
every year. The work we do at HRA truly saves lives, and we wouldn’t be able to
do it without the support of our community and our generous donors.
