Dear [Decision Maker],

On February 4, the nation celebrated National Girls and Women in Sports Day. This day is marked annually around the country and on Capitol Hill to commemorate the achievements of girls and women in athletics and to promote the continued expansion of opportunities for girls to play sports and live physically active lives.

It is with these goals in mind that I respectfully ask you to support the bipartisan High School Sports Collection Act, which was introduced on February 25, 2009 by Senator Olympia Snowe of Maine.

This important bill requires high schools to report basic data on the number of female and male students in their athletic programs and the expenditures of their men's and women's sports teams. Currently, high schools are not required to publicly disclose such data, making it difficult for students, parents and community members to ensure fairness in their schools' athletics programs.

Female students still receive more than 1.3 million fewer opportunities to play high school sports than male students do, and this translates into lost opportunities to reap the benefits of playing sports and lost access to athletic scholarships. Even when girls are given opportunities to play sports in high school, they often receive inferior benefits and services as compared to their male counterparts.

School sports can make a real difference in the lives of girls and young women--physically, academically, and emotionally--so it is critical that schools provide equal and meaningful opportunities for girls to play.

Thank you for your consideration of this request and for your support of sports opportunities for both boys and girls.

Sincerely,
