Birdathon 2024

Warbling Yogis

Friday, May 10

Join the Warbling Yogis— the Birdathon team with a twist (or maybe two)! Team leaders Christie Galen, Martha Gannett and Tonya Garreaud will combine birding with yoga as we bird our way around a few of Portland’s parks and natural areas. Beginning at Mt. Tabor Park, we’ll be looking for songbirds, woodpeckers, and raptors as we explore the park’s forest and open areas. From there we’ll head east to Powell Butte Nature Park to explore more open grassland habitat and enjoy lunch with a view. Our last stop will be Whitaker Ponds for waterfowl. Our sites may change depending on current bird sightings and weather conditions. As we seek out birds high and low, Tonya will lead us in simple yoga poses and stretches to ease the movement of neck and shoulders. No mats or yoga experience necessary—all poses will be done in our full birding gear. We will caravan to each site and will plan carpools prior to the trip.

About your leaders:

Christie Galen is a native Oregonian and avid birder. No matter the habitat she is rarely seen without her binoculars.

Martha Gannett is a long-time Bird Alliance of Oregon member and volunteer. She has enjoyed participating in many Birdathons over the years and finds birding and yoga to be a perfect combination.

Tonya Garreaud has been teaching yoga for over 20 years. She came to yoga as a way of keeping herself physically active but has found that yoga provides more than ease of movement, including the ability to focus and be deeply engaged with the natural world. Tonya has been involved with Bird Alliance of Oregon since 2015, an eager student of Laura Whittemore and other birding instructors.
