My Personal Journey with Parkinson's Disease:
Parkinson’s Disease is considered the fastest growing neurological disorder and 90,000 people a year are diagnosed in the US alone. If you do the math that comes out to someone being diagnosed every six minutes. Last year I was one of those diagnosed with Early Onset Parkinon’s Disease. My wife and I were devastated to say the least, but having resources like the Parkinson’s Foundation was a huge relief. For me personally, I have watched many people on social media share their journey and experiences with Parkinon’s. This was game changing for me! It was inspirational to see others succeeding, struggling, adapting, and fighting, and also to see the reality of the good and bad days we all have with this stupid disease.
So, I thought the best way I could help was by doing the same and showing that even getting to a diagnosis can be a long frustrating journey. I wanted to tell people first hand how this disease presented in me because it can present differently in everyone. It is considered a snowflake disease and no two are alike. After diagnosis it is ok to be upset, it is ok to feel lost or destroyed, but I also wanted people to know it is not a death sentence. Your life may not be the same, it may be harder, difficult, exhausting and frustrating, but it is still your life and you just have to fight harder for it. You are not alone whether locally or online support is out there.
For me, my wonderful wife Julia has been fantastic every step of the way and I am not sure how I’d do this without her. Here first words after diagnosis were “In sickness and in health” and “whatever we have to do or wherever we have to go”. We wanted to do something to spread the word about Parkinson’s and show that it is not the old man with shaky hands disease everything thinks it is. Julia works at 620 WTMJ and they gave us the privilege to talk about our journey with Parkinson’s Disease. So please, spread the word, donate to a good cause and let’s get science moving! I'm moving to beat Parkinson's disease!
Every dollar I raise goes a long way in helping the Parkinson's Foundation fulfill its mission of improving the lives of the one million Americans with Parkinson's. Please support me in this fight by making a donation. Your generosity will help raise awareness, more funding and more understanding of a disease that affects so many of our family and friends.
