CALLING ALL BC FIREFIGHTERS!
Get ready to step up to the challenge at the 24th Annual Climb the Wall 2025! This is your chance to show your strength, teamwork, and determination as you take on the 48-storey climb to the top of the Sheraton Vancouver Wall Centre Hotel. Whether you're racing against the clock or cheering on your team, it's time to get into the game!
Why Should Firefighters Join the Challenge?
This is more than just a climb—Climb the Wall is a team-building event and training challenge. Not only will you push your physical limits, but you'll also be raising funds to help improve lung health with the BC Lung Foundation. By participating, you'll bring the fire, the grit, and the spirit of teamwork that firefighters are known for!
The Climb
- Climb 48 storeys up the iconic Sheraton Vancouver Wall Centre Hotel.
- Gear up in full firefighter gear (SCBA and appropriate footwear are mandatory in both categories).
- It's a race against the clock—compete to see who can climb the fastest in each division!
Two Firefighter Categories:
To ensure a smooth and fair experience for all participants, it is essential to select the correct division when registering for the Stairclimb Challenge. Knowing your division ahead of time allows us to properly configure the timing and ensure accurate results. Here’s an explanation of the available options for firefighters and participants:
Division Options for Firefighters
1. Full Turnout Gear Division
Participants in this division wear the full standard gear used during firefighting emergencies, including:
- Fire-resistant coat and pants.
- Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA), including an air tank.
- Fire boots and gloves (liners must remain intact).
This division represents the most intense challenge, closely simulating real-life conditions faced by firefighters.
2. Alternate Gear Division
This division offers a less intense option for the firefighter participants or prefer reduced exertion levels. Gear options may include:
- Fitness wear (e.g., athletic clothing and comfortable footwear).
- Modified firefighter gear (lighter protective clothing).
- Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA), including an air tank.
Why Proper Division Selection Matters
- Timing Setup: Each division operates under different conditions, so the timing challenge must be configured correctly for accurate tracking and competition results.
- Safety and Fairness: Assigning participants to the appropriate division ensures everyone is evaluated on an equal footing based on their gear and level of difficulty.
- Event Experience: Proper planning and division alignment enhance the overall experience for participants, creating a well-organized and engaging event for all.
Health and Safety Considerations for Gear Selection
For those opting for the Full Turnout Gear Division, it’s important to note the health risks associated with prolonged use of full firefighting gear. Studies have highlighted concerns regarding per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), which are present in some traditional firefighting gear and linked to various health risks, including certain cancers. In British Columbia, efforts are being made to transition to PFAS-free gear, reflecting best practices for reducing exposure to harmful chemicals. Using Alternate Gear offers a safer option while still providing a meaningful challenge. IAFF
By selecting the correct division during registration, we can ensure a safe, efficient, and enjoyable event for everyone. Thank you for helping us make Climb the Wall 2025 a success!
